Be inspired by the natural beauty of the Lake District at Mountain Cottage. The 3-bedroom pet-friendly cottage in Coniston is within walking distance of local attractions, shops and Coniston Water. It is beautifully decorated, with space to entertain or relax following a day of exploration. Guests can cosy up with a movie or head to the garden Pavilion for an old-school games night. Alternatively, dine alfresco or enjoy a glass of wine whilst marvelling at countryside views.

With village amenities and Coniston Water just a short walk away, Mountain Cottage is the perfect spot for relaxation or an action-packed Lake District holiday. Nearby, guests can access the famous Cumbrian Way, browse independent craft shops, sample local ale in a traditional pub or even take a trip around the lake on a steam yacht gondola.

The property itself is in a quiet area of the village. It’s characterful, dating to the 19th century, yet with modern, comfortable interiors and tasteful decoration throughout. The ideal choice for families, couples and friends travelling together, Mountain Cottage is also a pet-friendly property thanks to a fully enclosed garden.

Ground Floor

You enter Mountain Cottage into a well-appointed kitchen that offers plenty of workspace for preparing snacks or social dinners with locally sourced produce from a nearby delicatessen. The kitchen is fully equipped with an oven, hob, microwave, fridge and comes with a dishwasher to save on the washing up!

Across from the kitchen, the separate dining area sits at the very heart of the property. This quirky room seats up to 5 people at a long dining table and boasts stunning countryside and garden views through the window. It’s a place, not just for eating together at breakfast, lunch or dinner, but also for playing board games with family and friends and planning the next day’s adventure taking inspiration from the terrain map.

Down a short hallway, the living room of Mountain Cottage is a cosy space with original sash windows, electric woodburner and local artwork. Guests can snuggle up on comfortable leather sofas with popcorn and Netflix or iPlayer on the 40” TV or enjoy a glass of wine and swap stories about the day.

Ground Floor Bedrooms

The second double bedroom is also located on the ground floor - a tranquil, light and airy sanctuary with garden views, cupboard space and décor in a relaxing blend of cool tones. A set of stairs lead from this room to a separate wet room with shower and a toilet which is shared with the third bedroom.

The third bedroom has a single bed and decorated in accents of green and ochre, bringing colours of the outdoors inside. A great room for teens or friends, it offers privacy while still being attached to the main house.

First Floor Bedrooms

The Master Bedroom is located on the first floor. A spacious room with an open feel, it’s perfect for couples. With a King-size bed dressed in soft white linens and blended warm tones, a TV and quirky, upcycled furniture, it’s a welcoming haven and a space in which to fully relax after a day of Lake District discovery.

An adjoining en-suite bathroom provides a choice of walk-in shower for refreshing morning wake-up calls and a modern, free-standing bathtub, where one can soak in bubbles with a well-earned glass of wine after a long day.

Outdoor Spaces – The Belvedere

Located high up in the garden, The Belvedere commands breath-taking views of the lake and countryside, offering a peaceful space to work with a laptop or sketchbook and be creatively inspired. A wooden desk and chair, fireplace and a plethora of books makes the room an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of the main house – a place where you can lose yourself in classic Lakeland poetry or photograph local landscapes from the balcony.

Outdoor Spaces –The Pavilion

The sunny Pavilion set away from the cottage is an old-school entertainment room where everyone can gather to enjoy play table football, great for wet days and evenings, teens and adults alike.

The Garden

The garden is a special place, a lovely example of a lakeside garden, for quiet contemplation, peaceful observation and relaxation. The landscaped area with flowering plants, low-rise slate walls, gravel pathways and grassy lawns offers the ideal spot for a sunset barbecue, sun worshipping, afternoon picnics or stargazing.

The Area

The south Lake District has long attracted artists, poets and writers who were all creatively inspired by the scenic landscapes, and Mountain Cottage is the perfect place to make your base to explore everything this stunning region of Cumbria has to offer.

A short walk from the property, Coniston, a thriving tourist town on the edge of Coniston Water, is home to superb cafes, pubs and restaurants, the John Ruskin Museum and Brantwood historic house - a museum and centre for the arts.

On the shores of Coniston Water, row boats, kayaks and canoes can be hired and there’s a steam yacht gondola from where you can relax and enjoy the scenery from spring through autumn.

Guests will find plenty of walking and biking trails in nearby Grizedale Forest (named 4th best mountain biking route in the country by The Telegraph) or hike to the summit of the Old Man of Coniston for spectacular 360 views and photo opportunities.

Coniston also has a handful of great pubs, where you can sample creative dishes made with local produce and local ales, such as the famous Bluebird Bitter, available in the 400-year-old Black Bull Pub in the village.

When it comes to shopping, the town champions local craftspeople with a whole host of gift shops. Local cafes serve homemade fare and restaurants offer dine in or take away options you can enjoy in the comfort of your holiday home.

If you fancy venturing further afield, it’s possible to access the famous Cumbrian Way from Mountain Cottage which covers the length of Coniston Water and the charming villages of Hawkshead, and Ambleside are 10 and 20 minutes by car respectively.

Fabulous wildcat summer

We had three marvellous weeks in Mountain Cottage this summer and loved every minute. The house was the perfect size for our family of four and we found everything we needed - including sufficient kitchen equipment to make toad in the hole! A rare find indeed for a holiday rental! The first week was wet and the house was a little chilly, but the electric fire soon warmed us up. Once the weather improved we were perfectly comfortable. (I should add I have also stayed here in the winter and it was well heated then - just the heating wasn't on in August, as you'd expect). Coniston is the perfect home base for a Lake District holiday. We tried a bit of everything on the lake - Coniston Launch, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, swimming - and of course climbed the Old Man and explored Boulder Valley. Ghyll scrambling was a real highlight. We barely needed to use the car, everything we wanted to see was within easy reach. Will and Giles were very friendly, very accessible hosts - every question was answered quickly. My only suggestion for improvement would be a printed local guide, for people to peruse of an evening when they're making plans for the next day. I'd love to visit again someday, and the kids are already making plans for next time we come to the Lakes.

Brilliant location

We were a multi generational group and the cottage worked perfectly for us -grandparents had a little more privacy with a gorgeous ensuite room upstairs whilst the family and children had the 2 downstairs bedrooms. Well equipped with a fun quirky garden and the location was perfect for walking to Coniston for pubs and shops and the lake.

Amazing stay in Coninston

The photos do not do justice to this beautiful, well-equipped cottage. The garden is just lovely with amazing views to the lake. Comfortable beds and so quiet - perfect for relaxation.

Beautiful cottage in lovely surroundings

We had a really pleasant stay at the Mountain Cottage in Coniston. Despite the stormy weather we were able to explore the local area and the rest of the time was spent at the cottage relaxing. The cottage has all the amenities you need and all communication with the owner was brilliant. We would stay again.

Beautiful and quirky cottage, in a perfect location in Coniston. Everything you would need while on holiday is in the cottage, plus extras which you usually wouldn’t get. Service from the Coley family was prefect with information on arrival and departure. We had a wonderful stay and would go back.

Lovely comfortable, quirky cottage with a labyrinth of pretty garden rooms and garden. It’s in a great location, only a short distance from the old disused railway track, the starting point for many excellent walks and in an easy stroll to one of the many pubs in Coniston. Highly recommend and we will go again.

Great location and fun, comfortable house

The setting is amazing with the Old Man of Coniston drawing the eye every time you step outside. The house and the outbuildings are a fun place to spend a few days in themselves. Comfortable beds and nice spaces to relax. I can definitely recommend.

Stunning location

We had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay at Mountain Cottage. Is it well equipped and ideally situated in the village of Coniston. There are a variety of stunning walks and locations to visit in Coniston itself and the surrounding areas. Many of the walks are suitable for children, and we are looking forward to returning and exploring the lakes further. The hosts are friendly and attentive, and provided excellent guidance and information regarding the cottage and local area. Thanks again for a wonderful experience.

Quirky & Cosy

I had a four day midweek stay here in order to have a 'walking holiday' in the area. Mountain Cottage ticked all the boxes as a place to stop! It is very comfortable and cosy, and equipped with everything you would need for a stay. I sometimes struggle sleeping in 'strange' beds, but this was perfect. Location wise it is a 5 minute walk from Coniston village, and from a walking point of view it's possible to begin walks from the back door to the Old Man of Coniston, Wetherlam, etc. Overall, I had an enjoyable, relaxing stay here will definitely stop again in the future.

Great Cottage and Location

We visited Mountain Cottage in the summer and had an amazing time. It's very well kitted out with everything you might need for a week's holiday. The cottage has been described as 'quirky'. There are 4 internal and external staircases which may prove difficult for some. The master bedroom is accessed via stairs in the kitchen, and the third bedroom is accessed via stairs in the downstairs double bedroom. The location is perfect with a 5-minute walk to Coniston Village, which has a good array of shops and a 10-minute to the lake. It's a great base to explore the South Lakes, either on foot, by bike, by car or on the Coniston Launch. There's so much to do, just don't forget to relax and take in the wonderful views of Coniston Water and Grizedale Forest.
